When speaking to a security specialist these are some terms that you may hear:
When installing motion sensors there is a feature that allows for the sensor to detect humans, but it does not detect animals under a certain size. Sensors have different ratings for animal immunity that can range from 25 pounds up to 100 pounds. Please check with your 1-800-BURGLAR Security Professional for more information.
For a monthly fee companies monitor the alarm systems and signals that come from your control panel. The owner would instruct the central station how to respond to the signals.
Your control panel monitors all of your installed security devices. This is the brains of the whole system and communicates back to the central station. When the system is armed the control panel tracks door openings, closings; movement, power failures, flooding and fire.
These consist of two pieces that include a switch and a magnet and are installed at the top or bottom of a window or door. When the door or window is closed the switch and magnet make contact. When the same doors or windows are opened and contact is broken a message is sent to the control panel which is then sent to the central station.
These detectors listen for the sound of breaking glass. Just before breaking, a window gives off sounds that are detectable by glass break sensors, but cannot be heard by the human ear. Glass break sensors pick up this sound and sends a message to the control panel.
This refers to a system that is wired into your home much like your phone lines or cable lines. Many new homes are pre-wired for security systems.
The keypad is the user interface to the system and where you turn your system on and off, check the status of the system, etc. Styles vary widely based on the type of system you choose to have installed.
When motion is detected these sensors send a signal to the control panel and the central station operator if your system is monitored. See Animal Immunity for more information on motion sensors and animal motion.
This refers to sensors that are installed around your property to detect motion and opening or closing of gates. This can also include glass break sensors.
Includes a monitor and a switcher that can be attached to cameras. A VCR can be hooked up to record activity and play back if needed. This type of system allows you to observe other areas of your home while you are in another.
A system that uses Radio Frequencies to send messages from sensors back to the control panel.
A zone is defined as an area in your home that you wish to protect. A home can be broken up into over 100 zones depending on your needs.
